When Huck Haines (Fred Astaire) and his jazz band of Wabash Indianians find themselves stuck in Paris without a paying gig, it's up to his buddy John (Randolph Scott) to appeal to his aunt, the legendary dressmaker Roberta (Helen Westley), for help. He also finds a Russian princess (Irene Dunne) working in the shop and a down-home American girl (Ginger Rogers) masquerading as a Polish countess because it's the best way to get a singing job. Roberta was the third RKO collaboration between Astaire and Rogers, and it's one of the more tepid, with too much time spent on 1930s Parisian fashion and the romance between Dunne and Scott. Dunne gets top billing and the best Jerome Kern ballads ("Yesterdays," "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes"), but as the second-banana couple Astaire and Rogers still get a tap battle, a romantic duet, and plenty of comic banter. |

Thirty Two Short Films About Glenn Gould
List Price: $19.98 Now Only: $19.30 You Save: $ 0.68 (3%)
Category: VHS Movies
Publisher: Sony Pictures Starring: Colm Feore, Derek Keurvorst, Katya Ladan, Devon Anderson, Joshua Greenblatt Directed By: François Girard Prices subject to change. Please verify pricing during checkout. |
|
François Girard originally conceived 32 Short Films About Glenn Gould as a biography to try to explain the bizarre genius of the master pianist who stopped touring in 1963 at the height of his success. The 32 parts play out key moments of Gould's life without stringing them together. They go from realistic (a scene in a Hamburg hotel in which Gould turns a maid on to the wonder of music) to nihilistic (a segment solely made up of the drugs Gould presumably took). Stratford actor Colm Feore is quite good as the slyly introverted, soft-spoken figure, although this film is more of an examination of loneliness than of music. |

Meet Me in St Louis (1944)
List Price: $14.98 Now Only: $3.99 You Save: $ 10.99 (73%)
Category: VHS Movies
Publisher: Warner Home Video Starring: Judy Garland, Margaret O'Brien, Mary Astor, Lucille Bremer, Leon Ames Directed By: Vincente Minnelli Prices subject to change. Please verify pricing during checkout. |
|
One of the finest American musicals, this 1944 film by Vincente Minnelli is an intentionally self-contained story set in 1903, in which a happy St. Louis family is shaken to their roots by the prospect of moving to New York, where the father has a better job pending. Judy Garland heads the cast in what amounts to a splendid, end-of-an-era story that nicely rhymes with the onset of the 20th century. The film is extraordinarily alive, the characters strong, and the musical numbers are so splendidly part of the storytelling that you don't feel the film has stopped for an interlude. --Tom Keogh. |

Singing Nun

One of the unlikeliest pop stars of the 1960s gets the bio treatment in The Singing Nun, a fictionalized account of the Belgian nun dubbed "Soeur Sourire" (Sister Smile). The cute tone is regrettable, and it's difficult to adjust to Debbie Reynolds in a habit, but the movie isn't bad for its kind. It's the light version of The Nun's Story, with Hollywood conflicts substituted for spiritual angst. The supporting cast brings in some camp appeal: Agnes Moorehead as a cranky nun, Chad Everett, and "Ed Sullivan as Himself." The best sequence has Sullivan's CBS crew showing up in Belgium to tape the Singing Nun for his TV shew--er, show--and sending the irresistibly catchy "Dominique" on its way to international success. |

Some people may sneer at this 1965 musical, but the truth is the film has earned its status as a perennially watchable romantic-drama, largely on the strength of a fun story and chemistry between stars Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer. Veteran filmmaker Robert Wise (The Day the Earth Stood Still) mostly stays out of the way of the film's appealing elements, which include a based-on-fact tale of Austria's von Trapp family, who fled their Nazi-occupied country in 1938. Andrews is delightful and even fascinating as Maria, who sheds her tomboyish ways as a novice nun to accept the mantle of adulthood, becoming matron of the motherless von Trapp clan. Plummer is matinee-idol handsome and gives a smart performance to boot, and the cast of young people and kids who make up the singing von Trapp children make a strong impression. Based on the Rodgers and Hammerstein stage musical, the score includes such winners as "Maria" and the future John Coltrane hit "My Favorite Things." --Tom Keogh. |
