"This is like one big orgasm!" says singer-frontman Danny Elfman toward the end of Oingo Boingo's final concert on Halloween night, 1995. That's an apt comparison, since this two-hour, 45-minute performance plays like an extended climax, with Elfman and his bandmates putting out enough energy to light a small city and turn their costumed devotees into a pulsing mass of mutual love. Elfman's like a supernova onstage, maintaining a miraculous pace through 32 songs, any one of which qualifies as definitive Boingo (though we're partial to "Insanity," "Dead Man's Party," and the Dr. Moreau-inspired "No Spill Blood"). |

Sometimes grace and hope come in surprising packages. The title character of Hedwig and the Angry Inch, a would-be glam-rock star from East Germany, undergoes a botched gender-change operation in order to escape from the Soviet bloc, only to watch the Berlin Wall come down on TV after being abandoned in a trailer park in middle America. Hedwig gets involved with Tommy, an adolescent boy who steals her songs and becomes a stadium-filling musical act. Suffering from a broken heart and a lust for revenge, Hedwig follows Tommy's tour, playing with her band (the Angry Inch) at tacky theme restaurants. |

Mistaken identity and crossed heart strings result when a cheerful, out-of-work salesgirl is mistaken for the mother of an abandoned infant. Although she tries to explain the situation at first, she is soon singing a different tune when the baby helps her win back her job, win over the boss's son and discover her own maternal instincts. This musical version of Ginger Rogers' classic, Bachelor Mother (1939), is the only film to team America's favorite newlyweds of the 1950s, Eddie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds. Year: 1956 Director: Norman Taurog Starring: Eddie Fiher, Debbie Reynolds, Adolphe Menjou, Tommy Noonan, Nita Talbot, Una Merkel. |

This nostalgic history lesson in the treasures of MGM musicals touches upon the obvious highlights--An American in Paris, Singin' in the Rain, many others--and includes clips of wonderful though more obscure performances by Esther Williams, Jimmy Durante, Eleanor Powell, and even Clark Gable singing and dancing. It's a film lover's box of candy and perfect for musical mavens, and getting a chance to see so many legends host the whole affair (many of whom have died since the film's 1974 release) is as pleasing as the old footage. --Tom Keogh. |

After the worldwide success of A Hard Day's Night, the Beatles and director Richard Lester reunited for a follow-up film, Eight Arms to Hold You. Well, that wasn't the final title; a pleading Lennon-McCartney tune provided the catchier handle: Help! A loose semispoof of the globe-trotting James Bond pictures, Help! has always been considered a somewhat disorganized comedown from its predecessor; but it presents "the famous Beatles" even more clearly as the English cousins of the Marx Brothers. The plot has an Eastern religious cult declaring that the new ring on Ringo's finger is the key element in a human sacrifice; they will stop at nothing to obtain it. Meanwhile, a mad scientist (crazed Victor Spinetti, who also appeared in A Hard Day's Night and Magical Mystery Tour) believes that if he has the ring, he could--dare we say it?--rule the world. |
