Five years after Godzilla 1985, the giant gray one awakens from his hibernation to take on his most unusual enemy, a towering mutant rosebush, the result of an ill-conceived genetics experiment. The 17th Godzilla feature (and second of the new wave) combines industrial espionage, military plots, and an element of the paranormal for a rather complicated story; but if the details blur in the confusion, the day-glo colors and bizarre monster designs help give the film a larger-than-life, comic-book look. Godzilla is still the lean, mean fighting machine, and Biollante is a distant cousin to Little Shop of Horrors villain Audrey II, with its vine-like tentacles and Venus-flytrap mouths. Disney loved to mix live action with animation (Mary Poppins, Bedknobs and Broomsticks), but this 1977 effort falls on its face. The turn-of-the-century story concerns an orphaned boy whose only friend is a cartoon monster. Andrei Konchalovsky's expansive television mini-series production of Homer's epic poem gets off to clumsy start as he tries to squeeze the Trojan War into a mere half hour, but once the arrogant but honorable Odysseus (strikingly played by Armand Assante) and his loyal crew begin their doomed voyage home, this film turns into a fantastical adventure. Integrating often-stunning special effects with inventive art design, Konchalovsky achieves a beautiful look on a limited budget as he follows the 10-year ordeal of Odysseus from his battles with the Cyclops and the magical Circe (Bernadette Peters) to his secret homecoming and his confrontation with the treacherous Eurymachus (Eric Roberts). Isabella Rossellini appears as his spiritual guide, the goddess Athena, with Greta Scacchi as Odysseus's faithful wife and Vanessa Williams as the seductive Calypso. Along the way, he meets up with some other dinos from different species, and they all bond and travel together. On the way, they have plenty of adventures. Even with elements of suspense, this is a pretty relaxed movie that isn't in a particular hurry to roll out its story. |
