"The legend of Union Pacific is the drama of a nation, young, tough, prodigal and invincible, conquering with an iron highroad the endless reaches of the West." This stemwinder of a foreword strikes the pseudo-biblical/American Empire keynote for Cecil B. DeMille's "history" of building the transcontinent railroad. Only the bombast--and Arthur Rosson's second-unit direction--rises to the film's epic mission. The mustache-twirling villainy is right out of 19th-century melodrama, and the romantic triangle of Joel McCrea's railroad troubleshooter, Barbara Stanwyck's aggressively "Oirish" postmistress-on-wheels, and their black-sheep chum played by newcomer Robert Preston is a feeble distraction. |

This extraordinary tale of adventure, romance, humor, and suspense has been hailed by critics worldwide as one of the best films of all time. A peasant village hires seven medieval mercenaries to defend it from marauding bandits. When the samurais arrive, a spectacular series of battles begin in which a splendidly mobile camera seems to be everywhere: shooting through foliage, rainstorms, dust, and wind. Toshiro Mifune's performance is ferocious as an overzealous and loudmouthed would-be samurai. |

|
Wilson Rawls's novel about an Oklahoma boy's devotion to two hunting dogs during the Great Depression was the basis for this appealing 1974 film made by a former Disney director, Norman Tokar. Stewart Peterson is very effective as a 12-year-old, hurtling down the path toward manhood with hounds at his side. (Though how he raised $50 to get the pooches in that economic climate is still a mystery....) --Tom Keogh. |

Jingle All the Way

|
Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sinbad star in this frivolous comedy about two fathers who are trying to locate and purchase the same hugely popular action toy on Christmas Eve. Schwarzenegger plays a busy father who makes lots of promises to his son that he can't keep, while Sinbad is a crazy postman just trying to make his boy happy. There are some truly comic moments in the film, such as the sight of Schwarzenegger being chased by a reindeer, and the obsequious efforts of a neighbor (Phil Hartman) to insinuate himself on Schwarzenegger's wife in the big man's continual absence. But for the most part, Jingle All the Way is a disposable, live-action cartoon. |

Ivanhoe (1982)
Price: $99.93
Category: VHS Movies
Publisher: Sony Pictures Starring: James Mason, Anthony Andrews, Sam Neill, Michael Hordern, Olivia Hussey Directed By: Douglas Camfield Prices subject to change. Please verify pricing during checkout. |
|
This 1982, 180-minute television remake of the original MGM feature, produced 30 years before, is the rare makeover of a classic that works quite well under its own steam. Anthony Andrews plays the disinherited knight who returns from the Third Crusades and is determined to raise the ransom to free a kidnapped King Richard (Julian Glover). With his bid rebuffed by his estranged father (Michael Hordern), and the affection of the latter's ward, Rowena (Lysette Anthony), compromised, Ivanhoe looks toward the generosity of the beautiful Rebecca (Olivia Hussey)--whose father (James Mason) he rescued from anti-Semitic Normans--for help. But a plot by faithless friends to discredit Ivanhoe, and his subsequent partnership with Robin Hood (David Robb) to save the day, keep this story from slowing down even for a minute. |

Cheech & Chong's first cannabis comedy is also their best, a souvenir from the more carefree days before "Just Say No," when people did not feel so defensive about inhaling. In 1978, the prevailing spirit was more like "Just Say Blow." Even New Yorker film critic Pauline Kael liked it (the movie, that is), adding that it was "an exploitation slapstick comedy, rather than a family picture, such as Blazing Saddles or High Anxiety--which means that it's dirtier, wilder, and sillier." The story has to do with bumbling potheads Cheech & Chong searching for primo bud, while being tailed by a team of inept law-enforcement officers, led by Sgt. Stedenko (Stacy Keach). Sample dialogue: When a cop pulls them over to ask if they are any illegal substances in his vehicle, Cheech replies: "Not any more, man." Up in Smoke is an irresistibly silly and charming movie that--despite, or perhaps because of, the national furor over drug use--plays today like a relic from a bygone era, a sweeter, more open, more innocent period in our history. --Jim Emerson. |

Adventures of Robin Hood

Category: VHS Movies
Publisher: MGM (Video & DVD) Starring: Errol Flynn, Olivia de Havilland, Basil Rathbone, Claude Rains, Patric Knowles Directed By: Michael Curtiz, William Keighley Prices subject to change. Please verify pricing during checkout. |
|
That's Errol Flynn looking dashing in the trees of Sherwood Forest in this 1938 swashbuckler about the hero who steals from the rich and gives to the poor. As far as the movies are concerned, Flynn is the definitive Robin Hood, and this Warner Bros. film directed by Michael Curtiz (Casablanca) and William Keighley (Each Dawn I Die) is a pulse-quickener with a perfect actor for every role: Olivia de Havilland as a beautiful Maid Marian, Claude Rains as an evil prince, Basil Rathbone as a snotty Guy of Gisbourne. A colorful, rich film that brings all the familiar, key scenes to life. --Tom Keogh. |
