Despite an irritating, tacked-on voice-over narration that somebody must have thought was necessary to make sense of the story (it wasn't), Last of the Dogmen is actually a very moving and magical film. Tom Berenger plays a Montana bounty hunter who helps an anthropologist (Barbara Hershey) search for the descendants of a Cheyenne tribe who disappeared in the 1870s. What the two find in a remote mountain stretch is an entire community of Cheyenne who have kept themselves cut off from the modern world. A Dances with Wolves parallel emerges as the white outsiders gradually fit in, but Last of the Dogmen stands up just fine without comparison to any other films. |

A pastoral turn of the century Western, The Grey Fox tells the story of an old-time stagecoach robber who, after 30 years locked away in prison, is released to a modern world he doesn't quite understand. He resumes his life the only way he knows how, by robbing, but since the days of the stagecoach are gone, he concentrates on holding up trains. Pursued by the private security force the Pinkertons, the elderly man known as the gentleman bandit develops a lore and a following all his own. Richard Farnsworth (The Natural) plays the lead, based on a true-life account, as a kind and thoughtful man who sees honor in what he does. |

Well, bless my beautiful hide! Director Stanley Donen invests this rollicking musical with a hearty exuberance. Howard Keel, with his big-as-all-outdoors baritone, stars as a bold "mountain man" living in the Oregon woods who brings home a bride (plucky songbird soprano Jane Powell) to his six slovenly brothers. Taming the rambunctious brood, Jane proceeds to make gentlemen of them so they can woo sweethearts of their own. But old habits die hard: their flirting gives way to fighting in the film's celebrated barn-raising scene, a lively acrobatic dance number exuberantly choreographed by Michael Kidd. |
