Madonna - Truth or Dare
Price: $10.95
Category: VHS Movies
Publisher: Live / Artisan Starring: Madonna, Donna DeLory, Niki Harris, Luis Camacho, Oliver Crumes Jr. Directed By: Alek Keshishian, Mark Aldo Miceli Prices subject to change. Please verify pricing during checkout. |
|
Norman Mailer may have come up with the title Advertisements for Myself, but in this case, Madonna is the one who really wrote the book. Truth or Dare, an engaging behind-the-scenes look at the pop star's Blonde Ambition tour, is a feature-film advertisement for herself that Roger Ebert cleverly dubbed "an authorized invasion of privacy." How much of it is calculated and how much of it is genuine, what Madonna chooses to reveal about herself and what she actually reveals in the process, are up to the viewer to decide. Patterned in part after the classic D.A. Pennebaker documentary of Bob Dylan Don't Look Back, the black-and-white sections of Truth or Dare offer glimpses into her offstage life, while excerpts from the show are seen in color. |

Quadrophenia
Price: $39.95
Category: VHS Movies
Publisher: Rhino / Wea Starring: Phil Daniels, Leslie Ash, Philip Davis, Mark Wingett, Sting Directed By: Franc Roddam Prices subject to change. Please verify pricing during checkout. |
|
Franc Roddam's terrifically energetic movie, set to music from the Who's Quadrophenia, is--at the very least, the best film ever based on a rock album (and, yes, that includes, Tommy, Pink Floyd: The Wall, and Jesus Christ Superstar). Actually, this tale of the battle between two early '60s youth subcultures--Mods and Rockers--in the seaside teenage wasteland of Brighton, England, isn't so much a cinematic "version" of the Who's 1979 double-record rock opera as it is a story based on the sequence of songs on the album. Quadrophenia is about that crucial time in teenhood when the lion's share of your sense of identity is tied up in the music you listen to, the clothes you wear, and the groups you hang out with. Jimmy (Phil Daniels) identifies himself with the sharp-dressing, scooter-riding Mods, who listen to American soul and British pop-rock (The Who themselves were once rather Mod). |
